У D&D 5e — від Volo's Guide to Monsters до
Monster Manual.
- 4

How aasimar names work in a 5e game
Aasimar do not have a naming language of their own. They are born to mortal parents, in mortal communities, so an aasimar raised in a human port town carries a human port town's name — the celestial part of the heritage shows up in the character's life, not in their birth certificate. This is the single most common mistake at a table: inventing an angelic word when the character's own mother would have chosen something ordinary.
The exception is the name a character takes rather than receives. Many aasimar acquire a virtue name after their guide first speaks to them, in the way of the Aasimar of Faerûn and of real-world Puritan naming: Vigil, Temperance, Sorrow, Errand. A virtue name works because it is a plain word doing an unusual job, which is also why an invented one rarely lands.
Your subrace sets the tone more than your ancestry does. A protector aasimar tends toward names that sound like a duty; a scourge aasimar toward something that sounds like a warning; a fallen aasimar often keeps the name they had and lets the room notice how it no longer fits. If you want the sound rather than the theme, an D&D name generator or a broader tiefling name generator will get you there faster.
Last, decide who is allowed to use which name. A character with a mortal name and a virtue name has two audiences — family and everyone who has seen what they are — and choosing which one to give a stranger is a roleplaying decision you can make at the table every session.
Four characters, four names, and the logic behind them
Each one starts from the mortal community that raised the character, then adds the celestial part only where it earns its place.
A protector aasimar raised by a fishing family, playing a Light cleric
Maren Ossel, called Lantern
An ordinary coastal surname doing the work of ancestry, plus a virtue name the village gave her rather than one she chose. 'Lantern' is a job before it is a symbol, which is what keeps it from sounding like a title she awarded herself.
A scourge aasimar whose radiance has hurt people around them
Tebren Ashcote
Nothing celestial in it at all. The surname carries the burn, and the character never explains it, which is a stronger table moment than a name that announces the subrace before the first session.
A fallen aasimar who kept their old name after their guide left
Solace Vane
A virtue name that has outlived the virtue. It was accurate when it was given and it is a wound now, and the player gets to decide, every time it is said aloud, whether it still is.
An aasimar raised in a temple who has never met a mortal relative
Ninth Bell of Ordinance
Institutional rather than familial: raised by a place, named by its schedule. This is the one case where an unusual construction fits, because the community that named the character was itself unusual.
Aasimar naming do's and don'ts
Most of these are the difference between a character the table remembers and a name the DM has to ask about twice.
| Do | Don't | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Start from the mortal culture that raised the character. | Invent a celestial tongue that no one at the table can pronounce. |
| Virtue names | Use a plain word — Vigil, Errand, Mercy — and let context do the work. | Coin an abstract noun that sounds holy and means nothing. |
| Subrace | Let protector, scourge or fallen colour the tone quietly. | Encode the subrace in the name so the reveal happens at character creation. |
| Pronunciation | Keep it sayable at speed, because it will be said every round. | Build a name with three apostrophes the DM will quietly rename. |
| Length | Two or three syllables for the name in play. | Use the full ceremonial form as the everyday one. |
| Setting fit | Match the region your DM is running, not a generic fantasy average. | Bring a Faerûnian virtue name into a setting with no Faerûnian history. |
