Roblox's official rules are tight. A username has to be 3-20 characters, can only contain letters (A-Z, a-z), numbers (0-9), and a single underscore. No spaces, no other symbols, no offensive language, no impersonation of Roblox staff, and no leaking personal info. Break any of those and the name gets rejected at signup or your account gets moderated later. The system is automated, fast, and unforgiving.

Roblox also splits identity in two: username and display name. Your username is what you log in with and what shows in URLs — it's permanent unless you pay 1000 Robux to change it. Your display name is the bigger label that appears above your avatar in-game and in chat, and you can change it freely every seven days. This is why almost every short common word — Shadow, Luna, Ace, Wolf — is locked up by accounts from 2007-2015, even dormant ones. Appending a number ('Shadow42') is the worst possible workaround because it telegraphs 'new account.' Swapping characters (Shadoq, Shaedow) or mashing two words ('ShadowMoth') reads much cleaner.

The dominant 2026 aesthetic is all-lowercase, no underscore, two soft words jammed together: 'softmochi', 'glazedstar', 'peachcove'. Sweaty competitive players go the opposite direction — ultra-short, three or four letters, sharp consonants, sometimes a single 'q' or 'x' on the end ('Vex', 'Zenq'). What gets you banned is anything sexual, slurs, threats, real-world contact info, or names that copy Roblox staff or famous creators. The moderation system catches most of it on submission, and the rest gets nuked the first time someone reports it.

Everything also passes Roblox's text filter, which matches patterns rather than whole words — a name gets rejected because a blocked string appears inside it, not because the name means anything.
