Horse Names: 300+ Ideas

Barn names, show names and registry-ready options, grouped so you can find the right kind fast.

About These Horse Names

A horse usually carries two names: the formal one on the papers and the short one the whole barn uses. The lists below are split that way — barn names you can call across an arena, show names built to be read aloud at a class, and then by mare, gelding, colour and language root, so you can start from whichever end of the problem you are on.

Nothing here is reserved, and no registry has been checked on your behalf: availability of a registered name is decided by your breed registry's own records. Take any of these as-is, or feed your horse's colour, breed and pedigree into the generator above and it will write names around that description.

Barn and show, separated

The short working name and the long formal one are different problems. They are listed separately here instead of mixed together.

Grouped the way you'd search

By mare and gelding, by colour and markings, by language root — so you skip the two hundred that do not apply.

Free for any use

Choosing a Horse Name From This List

  1. 1

Choose the pair, not the name

Pick a show name and a barn name that visibly belong together — "Copper Verdict" and "Penny", not two unconnected names. Every stable that ever writes both on a whiteboard will thank you.

  2. 2

Test the barn name at distance

Two syllables, a clear ending, and a sound that does not collide with any other horse in the yard. If it will not carry across an arena in wind, it is a nice name and the wrong one.

  3. 3

    Have three, not one

Registries reject duplicates, and popular show names go early. Shortlist three you are genuinely happy with before you fill in a form, and check the character limit for your breed while you are there.

  4. 4

Let the horse's markings do the work

A blaze, four white socks, a particular dapple — these produce names that fit one horse and no other, which is the whole point. The colour and markings list is the best place to start for that.

  5. 5

Avoid names that age into a joke

The name follows the horse for decades, gets announced at shows, and appears in pedigrees long after. A pun that lands today reads differently on a championship card in fifteen years.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Yes — every name on this page is free to use for a barn name, a show name or a registration application, with nothing to attribute. Availability for a registered name is a separate matter, decided by your breed registry's records rather than by this page.

Over 300 across the categories below, plus an unlimited supply from the generator at the top, which writes names around your horse's own colour, breed, temperament and pedigree.

The short, everyday name a horse actually answers to — one or two syllables, easy to call across a yard. It usually derives from the longer registered or show name, so a horse on paper as "Northern Argument" is "Argy" or "Nora" in the aisle.

It varies by registry. The Jockey Club limits Thoroughbred names to eighteen characters including spaces and punctuation; other breed registries set their own caps and their own rules about duplicates, initials and commercial terms. Check your breed's rules before submitting and bring alternatives.

Nothing is prescribed, and plenty of names read fine either way — but most people want a name that sits with the horse, so the mare and gelding lists below are separated for convenience rather than because a rule requires it.

It is the strongest convention in the sport, and it is why so many show names read as wordplay: a name that blends or nods to both parents lets a knowledgeable reader see the pedigree at a glance. If your horse has papers, start from the sire and dam names.
