This list has more than 150 warrior cat names in the style of Erin Hunter’s Warriors books, sorted by Clan, then leader and medicine cat names and the best-known cats from the series. The first section explains the naming rules, so your cat’s name changes the right way from kit to apprentice to warrior to leader.

How warrior cat names work

Every Clan cat has a two-part name. The first part, the prefix, stays with the cat for life and usually describes its looks or something the mother saw at its birth: Fire, Bramble, Frost, Moss. The second part, the suffix, changes with rank.

A kit takes -kit (Mosskit). At six moons an apprentice takes -paw (Mosspaw). At the warrior ceremony the leader chooses a suffix that fits the cat’s strengths or appearance (Mosspelt, Mossheart, Mossclaw). A new leader receives nine lives from StarClan and the suffix -star (Mossstar), and gives up the warrior suffix for good.

Prefixes come from what a forest cat would know: plants, weather, animals, colours and landscape. Suffixes mostly name body parts or qualities: -pelt, -tail, -claw, -fur, -whisker, -heart, -stripe, -storm, -feather, -leaf. Avoid human objects the cats would not know, such as metal or cars.

For names built to order, the Warrior Cats Name Generator can take a colour, a Clan and a personality and give you a full kit-to-warrior name. For real cats, see our cat names page.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a warrior cat name?

Choose a prefix from nature that fits the cat’s looks, such as Ash for a grey cat or Ember for a ginger one. Add -kit for a kitten, -paw for an apprentice, a warrior suffix such as -pelt, -claw, -heart or -tail for a warrior, and -star if it becomes a leader.

What are good warrior cat names for a she-cat?

Warriors names are not formally gendered, but she-cats in the books often have softer suffixes: -feather, -leaf, -song, -pool, -whisker. Sparrowfeather, Hollyshine, Dewpool, Echosong and Hazeltail fit that style.

Can a warrior cat’s name change more than once?

Yes, at each rank: Rusty became Firepaw, then Fireheart, then Firestar. The prefix never changes, except in rare story events where a leader renames a cat as a punishment or an honour.

Can a warrior cat name have three parts?

No. Clan names always have two parts. Cats from outside the Clans, such as loners, rogues and the Tribe of Rushing Water, use different naming patterns.
