Pokémon Name Generator
Two modes in one. Nickname the Pokémon on your team, or invent an original Fakemon with a name built from its type, the way the real ones are.
Nicknames for Your Team, Names for Your Fakemon
People come to a Pokémon name generator for two different reasons. Half want a nickname for the Charizard or Eevee they just caught: something cute, funny or cool that fits the character. The other half are making an original Pokémon, a Fakemon, for a fan game, a region project or a drawing, and need a name that sounds like Game Freak wrote it. This page does both. Tell it which one you need and it switches approach.
For nicknames it works from the species, the type and the personality you describe. For Fakemon it does what the official names do: blends a type word with an animal or object word, so Charmander is char plus salamander and Bulbasaur is bulb plus dinosaur. Give it the type, the base creature and the evolution stage and you get names that fit the pattern and a note on how each one was built.
Nickname Mode
Cute, funny, cool or pun nicknames for a specific Pokémon. Tell it the species and what it is like in battle and get names that match.
Fakemon Mode
Original species names built from type roots and creature words, with a three-stage evolution line if you want one.
Fits the Games' Rules
Nicknames are kept to the twelve-character limit the games enforce, so every result can actually be entered.
5 Tips for Naming a Pokémon
- 1
Stay under twelve characters
The games cap nicknames at twelve characters in the Western releases. A great nickname that does not fit is not a nickname. The generator enforces the limit; if you are naming by hand, count.
- 2
Blend two words for a Fakemon
Almost every official name is a portmanteau: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Pidgeot, Gengar. Take a word for the type or the trait, take a word for the animal, and find the syllable where they overlap.
- 3
Let the evolution line grow
Official evolution names get longer or heavier as the Pokémon does: Char-mander, Char-meleon, Char-izard. Keep a shared root across the stages and change the ending.
- 4
Match the nickname to the personality
A Snorlax called Rocket is a joke; a Snorlax called Pillow is a character. Nickname what the Pokémon is actually like on your team, not just its type.
- 5
Avoid names that are already Pokémon
There are over a thousand species, and a surprising number of good blends are taken. Search your Fakemon name plus Pokémon before you put it in a fan game.
