6 tips for choosing a WoW name

A WoW character can stay with you for a decade. These tips start from how each race names its own.

  1. Match the race, not the class

    A warlock is still a blood elf or an orc first, and the naming tradition follows the race. Shadowbolt is a spell, not a name.

  2. Learn the race's sound

    Night elf names run long, with soft Darnassian vowels. Orc names are short and hard, and dwarf names are blunt. A night elf called Gorzakh reads wrong from the first whisper.

  3. Say it out loud first

    Guildmates will type it in raid chat and call it on voice for years. If it takes three tries to say, they'll give you a nickname instead.

  4. Stay well under twelve

    Twelve letters is the limit, and long lore names often won't fit. Eight letters or fewer reads at a glance over your head and in a raid frame.

  5. No apostrophes, and no stand-ins

    Character names take letters only, so the lore look of an apostrophe is out. Don't patch the gap with an x or a doubled letter. Pick a name that is whole on its own.

  6. Get it right at creation

    A rename is a paid service from the in-game shop, and WoW Classic Era doesn't offer it at all. Two extra minutes on the creation screen cost nothing.

WoW name questions

A WoW character name is one word of 2 to 12 letters. Accented letters are fine. Numbers, spaces, apostrophes and other symbols are not. The game sets the capitals, and the name must be free on your realm and follow Blizzard's naming policy. Every name here fits those limits.

Each race has a distinct sound: night elf names run long and vowel-heavy, orcish names are short and hard-consonant, dwarven names read like surnames, and gnomish names lean playful. Tell the generator your race and it builds on that pattern rather than a generic fantasy word list.

Names are unique per realm, so the same name may be free on another. Otherwise change a letter cluster rather than adding an x: Elarion becomes Elarien or Ellarion, both still lore-consistent.
