6 tips for choosing an Instagram username

We looked at the 12,567 handles our generator gave in 631 Instagram searches, up to October 2026. The tips use what we found.

  1. Keep it spellable

    Someone who hears your handle once should be able to type it. Soundalike spellings like kwik or eatz make people guess, and a wrong guess lands on someone else's profile. Use them only when the spelling really is your brand.

  2. Skip the trailing numbers

    A string of digits reads as: the real name was taken. If you need something extra, add a word that means something, like your city, your niche or studio. Only 3% of our generator's handles have a number in them.

  3. One separator at most

    One period or underscore splits two words cleanly. Three of them can't be said out loud, and people drop or swap them when they type. In our searches, 19% of handles use an underscore and 12% a period.

Short, pronounceable, spellable from hearing it once, and clearly toned to your content. If a stranger can repeat it to a friend without spelling it out, it's working.

Up to 30 characters, using only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. No spaces, and you can't use a handle someone else holds. Every suggestion from this generator fits those rules.

Add a meaningful word rather than numbers: the, studio, co, your niche, or your city. taken.handle becomes the.taken.handle or takenhandle.studio. Same identity, still clean.

For a personal brand in coaching, art or photography, your name builds trust and survives pivots. For a theme or meme account, a niche handle usually grows faster than an unknown name.

Yes, in settings. But frequent changes confuse followers and break links, and Instagram limits how often you can switch. Treat it as changeable in emergencies, not as a rotating outfit.

Combine a soft texture word (velvet, golden, honeyed, lunar) with your subject, in lowercase, with at most one dot. Describe the mood to the generator, such as 'dreamy film-photo aesthetic', and run it a few times.
