Steam name rules

Steam gives you three names. The account name is your login: private, and it can never be changed. The profile name is what friends lists, reviews and CS2 show, and other players can have the same one. Your custom URL, steamcommunity.com/id/yourname, is yours alone, so that is the one we check, and each card says if it is available.

6 tips for choosing a Steam name

A login you keep forever, a profile name you can change, and a link that is yours alone. These tips cover all three.

  1. Keep the login plain

    Your account name can never be changed, not even by Steam Support. Make it plain and put the personality in the profile name, which you can change any time.

  2. Write for the killfeed

    CS2 shows your Steam profile name on the scoreboard and in the killfeed, small and mid-round. One short word is a name your team can call out on comms.

  3. Keep it searchable

    Profile names take small caps, symbols and emoji, and each one makes you harder to find in friend search. Someone you met in a lobby has to type your name from memory.

    If you trade skins, a plain readable name reads as a real person. Names built to look like a bot, a trade site or Steam Support get reported, and Steam's rules forbid posing as Valve staff.

    Your profile lists your previous profile names, and anyone can open that list. You can clear it, but sites that track Steam profiles may keep a copy.

    Without a custom URL, your profile link ends in a 17-digit number. Set the URL to your profile name, so the link people get matches the name they see.

Steam name questions

The account name is your login, it is private, and it can never be changed. The profile name is your public display name in friends lists, reviews and games like CS2, and you can change it as often as you like. Most people mean the profile name.

Yes. Your CS2 in-game nickname is your Steam profile name, so a name generated here is your CS2 name. Ask for a short killfeed-readable nickname and you will get options that stay legible at scoreboard size.

It is the same system. CS:GO and CS2 both display your Steam profile name, so anything that worked as a CS:GO nickname works now. Changing it in Steam changes it in game.

As often as you want, from your profile settings. Steam lists your previous profile names on your profile, where anyone can see them. You can clear that list, but frequent changes still confuse friends.

Your profile name takes 2 to 32 characters, with spaces, symbols and emoji. Your custom URL is stricter: 3 to 32 letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. Being able to use a symbol is not a reason to: anything people can't type in friend search costs you friend requests.
