Druid names with roots in oak and myth

Druids are the one class with a real history behind it. The Gauls and Irish had druids, the Romans wrote about them, and Irish and Welsh legend kept their names: Cathbad, Amergin, Mog Ruith. Fantasy druids borrowed that Celtic sound and added the forest: oak, rowan, ash, thorn, moss and fern. This generator is tuned for D&D 5e druids of every circle, World of Warcraft druids from night elf to Kul Tiran, Baldur's Gate 3 playthroughs, and original worldbuilding that needs a grove with its own voice.

Tell it who the character is: a firbolg Circle of the Moon druid who prefers bear form, a halfling Circle of Spores druid who tends mushrooms in a cellar, a tauren guardian who wants a name that will fit WoW's character limit. The AI reads the description and returns names that fit the race, the circle and the tone you asked for, from solemn archdruid to bear pun. It is free to try, and you can run it again until a name sticks.

  • Celtic and fantasy sources

Irish and Welsh names with the sound of the old druids, nature-built fantasy names in the D&D tradition, and race-specific names for WoW. Say which source you want and the generator matches its phonetics.

  • Names that fit the circle

A Circle of Wildfire druid should not sound like a Circle of Stars druid. Mention your circle and get names to match: Emberleaf for wildfire, Starweaver for stars, Sporecaller for spores, Moonpelt for moon.

  • Serious or pun, your call

Some druids want an archdruid's dignity. Others want to log into WoW as Bearlyalive. Ask for either and the generator follows the tone, including names short enough for game character limits.

5 tips for naming a druid

  1. Let the circle pick the root word

Circle of the Moon druids suit animal roots: pelt, claw, stag, wolf. Circle of Spores wants rot, mold and cap. Circle of Stars wants star, sky and lantern. Circle of Wildfire wants ember and ash. Circle of the Land can borrow from its terrain: a coast druid named Saltmarrow, a mountain druid named Greycrag.

  2. Match the name to the race

An elf druid can carry a long, flowing name like Faelorin Greyoak. A human druid can go Celtic: Lorcan Ashgrove. Halfling surnames in the Player's Handbook are homely compounds like Brushgather and Tealeaf, so a halfling druid might be Wren Mossbottom. Firbolgs, gentle forest giants, suit soft, unhurried names.

  3. Learn how Gaelic and Welsh spellings sound

Irish and Welsh names look harder than they are. Saoirse is roughly SEER-sha, Aisling is ASH-ling. In Welsh, a single f sounds like v, ff sounds like f and dd sounds like the th in this. Know the pronunciation before the DM asks, or pick a simpler spelling.

  4. Respect WoW's naming rules

World of Warcraft names allow 2 to 12 letters with no spaces, numbers or apostrophes, so troll names like Zul'jin style spellings will not save. Popular druid names are taken on busy realms, which is why so many players go for puns. Have three backups ready before you hit create.

  5. Do not borrow a famous druid's name

Halsin and Jaheira from Baldur's Gate 3, Malfurion and Cenarius from Warcraft, and Keyleth from Critical Role are well known. Naming your druid after one of them tells the table you are a fan, not who your character is. Use them as a sound reference and invent your own.

Frequently asked questions

Start with your race, then let your circle shape the surname. An elf druid might be Faelorin Greyoak, a halfling druid Wren Mossbottom, a human druid Lorcan Ashgrove. Then tilt the root word toward your circle: animal words for Moon, fungal words for Spores, sky words for Stars, ember words for Wildfire. Describe both race and circle and the generator combines them.

Most druid names that survive come from Irish and Welsh legend rather than records. Cathbad was the druid of Ulster's King Conchobar, Mog Ruith was a blind druid of Munster, and Bodhmall was a druidess who helped raise Fionn mac Cumhaill. Amergin and Taliesin were poets more than priests but are often grouped with druids. Diviciacus, an Aeduan druid, is mentioned by Cicero.

Match the race first. Night elf names flow, like Aelithra or Faelorin. Tauren and Highmountain names sound earthy, like Orahu. Troll and Zandalari names suit sharp consonants, like Jinzala, while Worgen and Kul Tiran druids fit old British names like Brennock or Morwenna. Keep it to 12 letters with no apostrophes or numbers, since WoW will reject them.

Druids spend much of their time shapeshifted, and guardian druids tank in bear form, so animal puns write themselves. Names like Bearlyalive, Hibearnate and Pawsitive are a long-running community joke. They are also practical: the obvious serious druid names are often taken on busy realms, and a pun is far more likely to be free. Ask the generator for funny names to get fresh ones.

The word is usually traced to a Celtic compound meaning something like oak-knower, joining a root for oak or strength with a root for knowing or seeing. Pliny the Elder linked the druids to oak groves and wrote about them cutting mistletoe from oak trees. That is why oak shows up in so many fantasy druid names, from Oakmantle to Greyoak.

Halsin is a wood elf archdruid of the Emerald Grove, and Jaheira is a half-elf druid returning from the earlier Baldur's Gate games. Both have short, two or three syllable names with soft sounds. For your own BG3 druid, aim for the same shape without copying them: Talwyn, Corran or Maelis. Describe your race and subclass and the generator suggests names in that style.
