Names for a whole world

A world name carries more weight than a town name. Readers say it on every page, players hear it every session, and it has to sound right in a prophecy and in a tavern. The worlds people remember are short and easy to say: Arda, Eberron, Faerûn, Krynn, Roshar. Most have two or three syllables and sound like a real word in a language you can't place.

Describe your world, its climate, its age and its mood, to get 20 names that fit it. Or browse the ideas below by feel.

5 tips for naming a fantasy world

  1. Name it in its own language

Tolkien named his world Arda in his invented Elvish. A world name that comes from a language in the setting sounds older than an English compound like Shadowland.

  2. Keep it to three syllables

Eberron, Faerûn and Roshar each have two or three. A longer name gets shortened by your players anyway.

  3. Let the sound match the mood

Hard sounds like k, g and r feel harsh and cold. Soft sounds like l, m and s feel calm and old. Valdrak and Elyssa are two very different worlds.

  4. Name the world and the map apart

Many settings name the planet, the continent and the plane separately. Faerûn is a continent on the world Toril. One name for everything can make a big setting feel small.

  5. Search it before you commit

Look the name up before you print a map. A name another game or book already uses will confuse your readers and their searches.

Frequently asked questions

Start from the world's mood and its oldest language. Pick two or three sounds that feel right, build a name of two or three syllables, and say it aloud in a sentence. Then search it to make sure no famous book or game already uses it.

Arda (Tolkien's world, which holds Middle-earth), Toril (Forgotten Realms), Krynn (Dragonlance), Eberron, Roshar (The Stormlight Archive), Nirn (The Elder Scrolls) and Azeroth (Warcraft). Use them for inspiration, not as your own names.

Usually. One word is easier to say and remember. Two-word names like The Shattered Sky work better for planes or regions than for a whole planet.

The world is the whole planet. A continent is one land mass on it, like Faerûn on Toril. A realm is usually a kingdom or a separate plane. Naming each one gives your setting depth.
