Greek names with real roots

Greek names are built like sentences. Nikandros is victory plus man, Hippokrates is horse plus power, Kleopatra is glory plus father. Ancient Greeks wore one personal name and added a father's name or a hometown when they needed to be specific. Modern Greeks carry saints' names, hereditary surnames and a name day on the church calendar. This generator covers both eras: Athenian citizens, Spartan warriors, mythological heroes, Byzantine-flavored characters and present-day Greek families.

Tell it who the person is: a hoplite from Thebes, a daughter of Hermes at a demigod camp, a Cretan grandmother who runs a taverna, a Theros champion of the sea god. You get a personal name, a patronymic, home city or modern surname to match the era, and a short note on what the name means. It is free to try, and every result comes from your own description rather than a fixed list.

  • Ancient and modern forms

Ask for classical Athens, Sparta, Hellenistic courts or modern Greece. Ancient names come with a patronymic or city; modern names come with a surname that fits the region you describe.

  • Meanings you can use

Greek compounds carry meaning in every syllable. Theodoros is gift of god, Sophia is wisdom, Philippos is lover of horses. Useful for a backstory, a prophecy or a baby announcement.

  • Correct female forms

Greek changes names by gender. Ancient Nikandros has a sister Nikandra; modern Papadopoulos has a daughter Papadopoulou. The generator keeps male and female forms consistent within a family.

5 tips for naming a Greek character

  1. Build the name from real roots

Most ancient names join two meaningful parts. Nik- is victory, -kles is glory, -andros is man, Hippo- is horse, Theo- is god, Phil- is love, -doros is gift. Nikokles, Philandros and Theodoros all sound right because they follow the pattern a Greek would recognize.

  2. Skip the surname for ancient characters

Ancient Greeks had no family surnames. They added a father's name or a place: Pericles son of Xanthippus, Herodotus of Halicarnassus. Classical Athenians also had a deme name, so Pericles was formally Pericles son of Xanthippus of Cholargos.

  3. Give Spartans a Doric sound

Spartans spoke Doric Greek, which often keeps a long a where Athenians used e. Where Athens says demos, Sparta says damos: Archidamos, Damaratos. Endings in -idas and -as, as in Leonidas and Brasidas, also read as Spartan.

  4. Think about the name day for modern characters

Modern Greeks traditionally name children after grandparents and saints, often the first son after the paternal grandfather. A character named Konstantinos celebrates on May 21 with everyone else of that name. That custom gives you a ready-made family scene.

  5. Pick one spelling system

Greek names reach English in Latinized forms or direct transliterations: Cleopatra or Kleopatra, Achilles or Achilleus, Socrates or Sokrates. Both are fine, but mixing them in one cast looks careless. Hercules is the Roman name; a Greek setting wants Herakles.

Frequently asked questions

Riordan's demigods mostly have ordinary modern names: Percy, Annabeth, Luke. A believable OC can do the same, or carry a name a Greek-obsessed parent would choose, like Theo, Callista or Xander. For a nod to the godly parent, use a root: Thalassa for a child of Poseidon, Phoebe for Apollo. Describe the cabin and personality and the generator suggests both styles.

No. Ancient Greeks used a single personal name and added identifiers when needed: a patronymic such as son of Xanthippus, or a hometown such as of Halicarnassus. After the reforms of Cleisthenes, Athenian citizens also had a deme name tied to their local district. Hereditary family surnames developed much later, in the Byzantine and modern periods.

Many endings point to a region. The -opoulos ending means son of or descendant of and is strongly linked to the Peloponnese. The -akis ending, originally a diminutive, is typical of Crete. The -idis and -iadis endings are common among families from Pontus, Asia Minor and northern Greece. The -atos ending is associated with Kefalonia and the Ionian islands.

A Greek woman's surname is traditionally the genitive form of the male surname, meaning of that family. Papadopoulos becomes Papadopoulou, Konstantinidis becomes Konstantinidou, Daskalakis becomes Daskalaki, Vlachos becomes Vlachou. Surnames already in genitive form, such as Georgiou, stay the same for both sexes. Get this right and a modern Greek family on the page reads as authentic.

A name day is the feast day of the saint you are named after, and in Greece it is traditionally celebrated as much as a birthday, sometimes more. Everyone named Nikos celebrates on December 6, the feast of Saint Nicholas, and every Konstantinos and Eleni on May 21. Friends drop by, call or bring sweets without needing an invitation.

Yes. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is set during the Peloponnesian War, so ask for classical Athenian or Spartan names and you get forms that fit beside Kassandra and Alexios. D&D Theros, from Mythic Odysseys of Theros, uses a Greek-inspired world with its own gods, so describe the character's god and polis and the generator gives Greek-flavored names without lifting official characters.
