Khajiit names that sound like Elsweyr

Khajiit names carry rank. Most are built from a short root and an optional Ta'agra honorific that says where the Khajiit stands: M' for a child or apprentice, J' for a young adult, Ri' for someone who leads. When the Khajiit earns a new status, the prefix changes, so the name grows up with the character. This generator is tuned for Skyrim caravan cats, Elder Scrolls Online characters from Elsweyr and Reaper's March, Oblivion and Morrowind roleplay, and fan fiction that needs a Khajiit who sounds like they crossed the sands to get there.

Tell it who the character is: a Suthay-raht smuggler running moon sugar into Riften, a Senche-raht warrior who guards a caravan, a young mage who left Elsweyr for the College of Winterhold. The AI returns names built from Ta'agra-style roots, with an honorific that fits the role, or none at all if the character has not earned one. Ask for a thief, a warrior, an elder or a scholar and the prefix follows.

  • Ta'agra honorifics done right

Dar for thieves, Do for warriors, Jo for scholars, Ri for leaders. Name the role in your description and you get one honorific, with the apostrophe where the games put it.

  • Every era of Tamriel

Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online share the same Khajiit naming habits. Use the results for a playthrough, a mod, an ESO roleplay guild or a fan novel.

  • Roots that sound like Ta'agra

Khajiit roots lean on rolled r's, z and zh sounds and doubled vowels: Zhurrak, M'raadh, Ra'zakhir. They stay clear of Nord and Imperial sounds, so the cat never reads as a man in a costume.

5 tips for naming a Khajiit

  1. Use one honorific, not two

A Khajiit carries one title at a time. Ri'jahar is a leader; Ri'Dar'jahar is a typo. If the character changes rank, swap the prefix rather than stacking a second one on top. That swap is also a neat way to mark a character arc.

  2. Put the apostrophe after the honorific

The apostrophe separates the title from the root: J'zargo, Ri'saad, M'aiq. Some names capitalize the root, as in Do'Zakar, while most keep it lowercase. Pick one style per story and stick to it.

  3. Match the honorific to rank, not attitude

Dro marks a grandfather or respected elder. Ra and Ri mark high status, with Ri the highest. A twenty-year-old upstart calling himself Ri' will raise eyebrows in Elsweyr. Start a young character on J' or M' and let the name be promoted.

  4. Not every Khajiit needs a title

Plenty of Khajiit in the games go by a bare name: Kharjo, Ahkari. Razum-dar uses a hyphenated suffix instead of a prefix. A plain root suits a commoner, a caravan guard or anyone hiding their past.

  5. Test it in the third person

Khajiit talk about themselves as 'this one', 'Khajiit' or by name. A name that reads well in 'Ra'zakhir does not like this plan' is a name that works in dialogue. Write one line before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Most Khajiit names are a root plus an optional honorific from Ta'agra, the Khajiit language, joined by an apostrophe. The honorific reflects rank or role: J' for a young adult, Dro' for an elder, Ri' for a leader. Because rank changes, a Khajiit can change prefix over a lifetime. Some names use a suffix such as -dar or -daro instead, and many use no honorific at all.

Dar marks a thief or someone clever. Do is a warrior. Dro is a grandfather or respected elder. J, Ja and Ji mark a bachelor or young adult, M and Ma a child or apprentice, and S an adult. Jo is a wizard or scholar. Ra and Ri signal high status, with Ri the highest. The suffix -daro means nimble and is common on female names, and -dra, -la and -ko also appear.

The apostrophe separates the honorific from the rest of the name. In J'zargo, the J' marks a young adult. In Ri'saad, the Ri' marks high standing, which fits a Khajiit who runs one of Skyrim's caravans. M'aiq the Liar uses the short M' form. When there is no honorific, as with Kharjo or Ahkari, there is no apostrophe. Use one apostrophe per name and place it right after the prefix.

Not in the way honorifics do. A Khajiit's furstock is decided by the phases of the moons Masser and Secunda at birth, producing forms as different as the small Alfiq, the upright Cathay, the Suthay-raht seen in Skyrim and the Senche, big enough to ride. Honorifics track rank and role, not body type. Mention the furstock in your description anyway; it helps set the tone of the name.

Female Khajiit use the same honorifics as males, so Ri'shara or Ja'sabi both work. Ahkari, who leads a caravan in Skyrim, goes without a prefix. Endings in -a and -i read as softer, and the -daro suffix, meaning nimble, is a common choice for women: Ashari-daro, Taziri-daro. Keep the root short and pair it with a prefix only if her rank calls for one.

Generated names are original phonetic constructions and are yours to use, including in mods and fan fiction. The in-game names mentioned on this page, such as J'zargo, Ri'saad, M'aiq and Razum-dar, belong to Bethesda and ZeniMax and are listed for reference only. For a new character, generate a fresh name instead of reusing an existing one, especially for an ESO roleplay guild.
