Na'vi names that follow the language
Na'vi is a full constructed language, created by linguist Paul Frommer for James Cameron's Avatar. It has rules, and a name that breaks them stands out at once. There are no b, d or g sounds. There are ejective consonants written px, tx and kx, which pop from the back of the throat. The apostrophe is a real letter, a glottal stop, as in Mo'at and Tsu'tey. Names in the films stay inside that system: Neytiri, Eytukan, Ronal, Tonowari, Tsireya, Lo'ak.
Tell the generator who your Na'vi is: an Omatikaya hunter, a Metkayina free diver, a Tayrangi ikran rider, a child of two clans. You get a personal name that uses Na'vi sounds, and on request a full formal name in the pattern of Neytiri te Tskaha Mo'at'ite, with a family name and a parent's name attached.
Built from Na'vi sounds
Names use the language's own consonants and seven vowels, including ejectives and the glottal stop, and avoid the sounds Na'vi does not have. They read as if they came from the films.
Clan and family included
Ask for a full name and get personal name, te, family name and a parent's name with the ending -'itan for a son or -'ite for a daughter.
For OCs, fan fiction and roleplay
Suited to original characters, Avatar fan fiction, tabletop and Discord roleplay, and naming your character in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
5 tips for creating a Na'vi name
Leave out b, d and g
Na'vi has p, t and k but none of their voiced partners, and no j, ch or sh sounds either. Brandok and Jadira are not possible Na'vi names. Pxantok and Tsalira are.
Use the apostrophe as a consonant
The glottal stop is the catch in the middle of uh-oh. It separates syllables in names such as Mo'at, Lo'ak and Tsu'tey. Place one where you want a sharp break, not as decoration at random.
Add an ejective for a strong sound
Px, tx and kx are single popped consonants. One of them at the start of a syllable gives a name weight: Txewì, Kxani, Ìpxi. One per name is plenty.
Build the full name in order
The formal pattern is personal name, te, family name, then a parent's name plus -'itan (son of) or -'ite (daughter of). Neytiri te Tskaha Mo'at'ite is Neytiri of the Tskaha, daughter of Mo'at.
Pick the clan before the name
Forest Omatikaya names in the films are tight and clipped, like Tsu'tey and Eytukan. Reef Metkayina names run softer and more open, like Tonowari, Ronal and Tsireya. Choosing the clan first keeps your character's name in the right family of sounds.
