How Spanish names work
A full Spanish name has a first name and two surnames: the father's first surname, then the mother's. Gabriel García Márquez took García from his father and Márquez from his mother. Many first names are compound, like María José or Juan Carlos, and saints' names stay the most common across Spain and Latin America.
Say who the person is, their country, era or story, to get 20 full names, each with what the first name means.
5 tips for choosing a Spanish name
Use both surnames
A character called only Carlos García sounds foreign to Spanish speakers in formal settings. Carlos García López sounds like a real person on an ID card.
Match the country
Names differ by place. Xochitl and Itzel come from Nahuatl and are Mexican. Iker and Ainhoa are Basque and common in Spain. Pick names from your character's country.
Mind the era
In Spain, Lucía, Hugo and Martín were among the most common baby names of the 2010s and 2020s. Grandparents are more likely to be Carmen, Antonio or Dolores.
Keep the accents
José, Martínez and Sofía need their accents. Without them, the name looks wrong to a Spanish reader, and some names change meaning.
Add a nickname
Spanish nicknames are part of daily life: Pepe for José, Paco for Francisco, Lola for Dolores. A nickname makes a character feel known.
