6 tips for choosing a Twitter username

Fifteen characters go fast on X. These tips help you spend them.

  1. Two short words at most

    X gives you 15 characters, half of what Instagram allows. Pick words that earn their length and cut the rest.

  2. Leave the dots behind

    A handle with a period from Instagram or Snapchat won't carry over to X as written. Join the words, or use one underscore.

  3. Skip the extra underscores

    A leading or trailing underscore reads as a name claimed late. People drop it when they type your @, and the mention goes to someone else.

    The display name takes 50 characters, spaces and emoji, and you can change it whenever you like. Put the joke or the job title there and keep the @ short.

An X (Twitter) handle has more than 4 and no more than 15 characters, using only letters, numbers and underscores. No periods, dashes or spaces, and it must be unique. Every handle here fits those limits.

Yes, as often as you like, from your account settings. The catch: X frees your old handle at once, so anyone can take it, and every link to your old @ then points at their account.

The @handle is your unique address: up to 15 characters of letters, numbers and underscores. The display name is the bold text above it: up to 50 characters with spaces and emoji, and it doesn't have to be unique. Most of your personality belongs in the display name.

Change a word rather than adding numbers or a trailing underscore. If quietferry is gone, try stillferry, ferryquiet or quietharbor. All fit in fifteen characters, and none reads as a second choice.
