This list has more than 150 drow names for Dungeons & Dragons and the Forgotten Realms: female and male first names, house names for your character’s family, and the canon drow from the novels and games they are modelled on. The first section explains the sound patterns that make a name read as drow, so you can build your own.
How drow names work
A drow is introduced with a first name and a house name, as in Drizzt Do’Urden or Jarlaxle Baenre. The house is the matriarchal family that rules the drow’s standing in the city, so the house name matters as much as the first name. Commoners and houseless drow go by a first name alone.
Drow names lean on a small set of sounds: z, x, v, q, l, r, th and doubled vowels. Female names in the novels tend to be longer and softer, often ending in -a, -ae, -iira, -ra or -yl, and priestesses of Lolth often carry the most elaborate names. Male names are shorter and harder, with -in, -on, -afein, -ryn and -ax endings. Apostrophes appear more often in house names than first names.
The Drow Name Generator builds names on these rules with a first name, a house and a short meaning for each. For the wider elf family, try the Dark Elf Name Generator or the Elf Name Generator.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good female drow name?
For a noble or priestess, pick a long name with a soft ending such as Zelvyraa, Xyliira or Vaelinthra. For a rogue or a warrior, a short name like Ryza, Quess or Zessa is easier to say at the table.
What is a good male drow name?
Male drow names are shorter and harder: Zaelthir, Vorlaxin or Ryltarn for a noble, Zarn, Vyx or Qoth for a mercenary. The -in, -ryn and -ax endings are the most recognisably drow.
Do drow have last names?
They have house names, which work like family names. A noble drow is introduced as first name plus house, for example Jarlaxle Baenre. A houseless drow uses only a first name.
Can I use Drizzt as a character name?
You can, but the whole table will think of Salvatore’s ranger. Most players take the sound pattern rather than the name itself. Our D&D Name Generator and the drow generator both produce original names in the same style.
What sounds make a name sound drow?
Z, x, v, q, th and doubled vowels, with apostrophes in house names. Compare Zaknafein, Jarlaxle and Vierna with surface-elf names such as Elrond or Galadriel, which rely on l, n and r and avoid the harsh consonants.
