Discord server name rules

A server name is the first thing a stranger reads on an invite, and it has to say what the server is in a few words. Discord accepts almost any name, and many servers share one. What only one server can hold is the custom invite link, discord.gg/yourname, so that is what we check for each name.

  • Length

    Up to 100 characters, but Discord cuts long names short at the top of the channel list. Two to four words read whole.

  • Characters

    Spaces, capitals, symbols and emoji are all allowed.

  • Invite link

    Server names repeat, the custom invite link can't. A server at boost Level 3 can set one, and loses it 30 days after it drops below.

  • Link characters

    Up to 25 letters, numbers or dashes. No spaces.

6 tips for choosing a Discord server name

A stranger decides whether to join from the name on the invite. These tips make that name do its job.

    One leading emoji can help a server stand out in a list. Four make the name hard to search, hard to read at small size, and awkward for anyone using a screen reader.

    Discord lists large Community servers in Discovery and asks that a server's name describe it accurately. A brand word plus the topic is both memorable and clear.

Discord server name questions

Discord allows up to 100 characters for a server name, which is far longer than anything readable. Names that work in practice run two to four words, because Discord cuts long names short and people scan rather than read.

If you want to be found, yes. Discord asks servers in Discovery for a name that describes them accurately, and a stranger reading an invite decides from the name. A brand word plus the topic, like The Hollow | Valorant, gives you both.

Yes, and one at the front can help you stand out in a crowded server list. More than that makes the name harder to search, harder to read at small sizes, and unpleasant for screen reader users.

Open Server Settings, then Overview, and edit the server name. You need Manage Server permission. Unlike a username, there is no cooldown. Renaming an established community does cost you recognition, though.

A server name is the community's name, allows spaces and emoji, is not unique, and can be changed freely. A username is your personal @handle, is globally unique, and is lowercase only. Our Discord username generator covers that one.
