Guild names people want under their character
A guild name is worn by every member, on every character, in every city and battleground. That is why the good ones are short, readable at a glance and say something about the people behind them. A progression raid team wants a name that sounds like it clears content. A social guild wants a name that makes a stranger smile in the group finder. The same name rarely does both.
Say what the guild is for and where it plays: a Horde mythic raiding guild, a Free Company for crafters in FFXIV, a WvW guild in Guild Wars 2, a thieves' guild for your D&D city. You get names in that register, a short tag where the game uses one, and a line on why each fits.
Fits the nameplate
World of Warcraft allows 24 characters for a guild name and other games set their own limits. Suggestions stay short, avoid special characters and read cleanly above a character's head.
Serious, social or silly
Ask for a name that sounds like a world-first contender, a cosy crafting circle or a pun your raid leader will regret. The tone follows the brief instead of defaulting to dark and edgy.
Guilds for tabletop worlds too
Need a thieves' guild, a mages' college, a merchant league or a mercenary company for a campaign? Describe the city and the trade and get names that belong in that setting.
5 tips for naming a guild
Say it out loud in voice chat
You will say the name on Discord every raid night. If it is hard to pronounce or easy to mishear, people will shorten it to something you did not choose. Two to four words that roll off the tongue win.
Check the limit and the tag
Games cap the length of guild names and many show a short tag next to each member. Check the limit in your game before you fall for a long name, and make sure the initials do not spell something you would rather not wear.
Match the name to how you play
A name like Mythic Or Bust sets an expectation of hard progression. Tea and Wipes tells recruits you are relaxed about it. Recruits read the name before the description, so let it filter for you.
Avoid names that date quickly
A reference to this season's boss or this month's meme is fun for six weeks. Guilds that last years tend to have names that would have worked in any expansion.
Search the realm first
Guild names are unique per realm or server in most games. Look the name up in the guild finder or on a community site before you gather signatures, and have a second choice ready.
