Superhero Names Built From the Power, Not a Word List
A superhero name has to do three things: tell you the power or theme, sound good shouted by a sidekick, and not already belong to Marvel or DC. Most generators glue an adjective to a noun and give you Captain Thunderfist. This one starts from what the hero can do, who they are underneath the mask, and what tone the story wants, then builds names the way comic writers do: a power metaphor, a mythic reference, a single strong word, or an alliterative alter ego.
It works for original comics and webtoons, novels and screenplays, tabletop supers games like Mutants & Masterminds, video game characters, Halloween costumes and kids' school projects. Ask for a dark antihero and you get names with weight; ask for a kid-friendly hero and you get something that fits on a lunchbox.
Power-Based Codenames
Tell it the power and get names that encode it without saying it: Gravitas for a gravity controller, Ember for a pyrokinetic, Quill for a speedster archer.
Alter Egos Included
Every hero name comes with a matching civilian name, alliterative if you want the classic feel, so the secret identity is ready too.
Filtered Against Existing Heroes
Results are checked against well-known Marvel, DC and Image characters so you do not accidentally name your hero after one that already has a movie.
5 Tips for Naming a Superhero
- 1
Name the power sideways
Fire Man tells you the power and nothing else. Ember, Pyre or Cinder tell you the power and the personality. Reach for a word one step away from the literal ability.
- 2
Match the name to the era of your story
Golden-age heroes get Captain, Miss and Doctor. Modern heroes get one word. Antiheroes get a noun with an edge: Ronin, Wraith, Blackout. Pick the era first and the name style follows.
- 3
Say it in a sentence
A superhero name gets said by news anchors, villains and frightened bystanders. If it does not work in the sentence "Look, it's ___!", it will not work on the page either.
- 4
Give the alter ego a rhythm
Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Clark Kent. Alliteration or a two-beat name makes the civilian identity as memorable as the mask. It is a convention because it works.
- 5
Search it before you publish
Marvel and DC own thousands of character names, many of them obscure. Search your hero name plus "comics" before it goes on a cover, a game or a shirt.
